unable to get 800x600 res in 16 & 32 bit high color,256 also.bios looks ok.system is duron 750--128 megs--via chipset.4 in1 drivers are loaded.device mgr shows everything is ok.

is the Monitor INF settings the correct one for the brand of monitor you have?

adapter was tried at optimal and default.how can i tell if inf settings are correct?

Control Panel - Display Settings - Settings - Advanced - Monitor - Chhange settings & make sure it says what your monitor is, and not standard Monitor or PnP.

tried to set the correct name for monitor to no avail.swapped monitor for newer one and got the resolution.the old monitor is 6 yrs
old.this wouldn't be a problem?

It could be possible that the older monitor might be a standard VGA which would then be why it wouldn't go to 800x600 as 99% of VGA monitors only done 640x480x256c max.
