System specs (short version)
Athlon 1Ghz 266
Asus A7V-133
GeForce MX
I finally found my performance problem running OpenGL app's on my wife's computer after updating everything and still getting 1-3fps in MDK2 and graphic glitches in other app's.
The default OpenGL is for Microsoft drivers! http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/cwmsmilies/cwm24.gif
Now that I've found the problem, I don't know the solution...I do I get rid of the MS OpenGL and use the GeForce Open GL as default? This is running on WinME.

Go into the Windows\System folder and find opengl32.dll and rename it opengl32.old, this SHOULD force Windows to use your video card's OpenGL driver.
If it doesn't work, it's easy to restore the file to its original name.

Thanks, I was thinking about trying that but wasn't sure if it would work http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/smile.gif
Would this force the nVidia drivers then, or would it not be able to find ANY OpenGL drivers...?
I'll repost after I try this tonight.
Thanks again!

I'm still at work, I hope I get a chance to try this today...

Didn't work, renameing/deleting opengl.dll
It just recreated it!! http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/cwmsmilies/cwm24.gif
This is starting to erk me off!
Where does Windows keep the Vid driver info? I couldn't find it in system.ini http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/cwmsmilies/cwm36.gif

I checked my win.ini and system.ini and didn't find anything there, it looks like it might be controlled by registry entry. http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/cwmsmilies/cwm22.gif
I can't remember the exact key, hopefully Silverman will bail me out here and provide the correct one.
You may also have to look in the .cfg and .ini files of your applications and edit them to point toward the nVidia drivers, which should be in the \Windows\System directory.
Here's an idea! Make a copy of the nVidia OpenGL driver, rename it opengl32.dll and no matter which file the application looks for, it will be the nVidia driver! http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/cwmsmilies/cwm4.gif
(almost like he knew what he was talking about http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/cwmsmilies/cwm1.gif )
I did a copy-and-rename like this to get Unreal running on my PC.
Hope this helps. http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/cwmsmilies/cwm16.gif

Windows\system folder for nvopengl.dll
Also reg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\
OpenGLdrivers\RIVATNT\nvopengl.dll make sure they both are nvopengl.dll
Also in control panel -display -advanced- Geforce tab- will tell what version Like nvopengl.dll 4.13.01.2181
I agree with ZEROTECH just force the thing. That way you will no it is the latest driver.

Thanks for the back-up, Silverman. http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/cwmsmilies/cwm35.gif
I know this isn't the first time you've come in to cover me. http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/cwmsmilies/cwm36.gif
Checking that registry key has helped a few times. I've GOT to print that out and keep it in my "vital notes" folder.

No problem ZT the string is for WinMe by the way. Whats always helped me in the past is to remove all past drivers and traces of past drivers for Nvidia before updating drivers, especially since the 21.81 drivers are supposedly rewritten and improved OpenGL. I'm still waiting for the Improved performance. HeHe

Good idea's...none of them work.
Reg Hacked the default, replaced openlg32.dll with nvopengl.dll (3 seconds later it recreates and replaces with the original .dll)...I'm stumped, I'm lost and very bummed...
The odd thing is, this is all the hardware that exitsted during the system install...Windows is being her normal b1tch1e self

Sounds like you have a system restore function enabled, if this is the case than turn it off or disable it completely than try to change the dll. System restore and backup is a good idea on MS's part but can be a real fornicator when trying to change or update system level drivers.

Ahh...I knew I forgot to do something when I rebuilt that machine! http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/biggrin.gif

In otherwords...that didn't help. Always good to diable that monster, but it still recreates the opengl32.dll whenever changed or deleted.
Why do I always have these odd problems that can't be fixed? Am I jinxed? http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/cwmsmilies/cwm23.gif
Any other ideas to take opengl from windows and use the drivers I want?

2 cups coffee and a handfull of aspirin and I'm ready to go again...remove the nvidia drivers from add/remove programs in control panel reboot but don't reinstall at this time. You should be in VGA mode, make sure all referances to NVIDIA are gone from registry. Also make sure OpenGL.dll is removed as well. Once you have done this than reinstall the drivers of your choice as you normally would. I like to do it this way it's a kinda roundabout way to trick the system into thinking you have a brand new vid card installed. Let me know how it goes.

Question (I know this is going happen when I try later):
What should I do when Windows recreates the OPENGL32.DLL again? (there is no opengl.dll)
For cleaning the registry (shouldn't be too hard, I have a good RegClean tool (NOT MS). This sounds like it might work, but I've never had this many problems with Vid drivers (except on Compaq Deskpros without the drivers). I'll let you know how it goes.

If all goes well the openGL32.dll should be overwritten with the new nvOpenGL when the drivers for the vidcard are installed.

It didn't go well... http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/cwmsmilies/cwm10.gif
I'm going to just let this go and if I do something that fixes I'll post it, but until then I'm at a brick wall...
I even tried installing older drivers, deleteing the reg keys and the opengl32.dll (which still recreates itself). http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/cwmsmilies/cwm29.gif

Look in the directory c:\windows\sysbckup - is the opengl32.dll file in there?

If it is, are you suggesting to delete it from there? That would make since...that is where it would store .dll's for recovery for those people that like to delete any file that they didn't create (I know a user that did this once, deleted his entire Windows directory)
I'll mess with that a bit and see if that does anything effective and post the results later. Thanks MacGyver!
