Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : WHY Does Win ME Research for Hardware After a Flash BIOS Upgrade?

Whenever I flash my BIOS, it seems that Windows ME wants to re-search for new motherboard hardware EVEN THOUGH I have NOT made any changes to my registry or hardware configuration. Why is this? I thought that it first checks the registry to see if the device exists and if it does, then it doesn't check. Is there something else telling it to do this? Does it create a new device profile when it does this (i.e. deletes the old devices from the current device list and adds the new one)? Is there a way to STOP this from happening when flashing the BIOS?

Thanks,

Tony

If it updated the Plug & Play BIOS, it will have to redetect everything that was previously installed in a plug & play configuration, which is normally everything. I don't think you will find a way to prevent this from happening, unfortunately.

Does it just replace the old devices in the CURRENT Device Profile with the same ones? If I had a problem in the past with a particular hardware device that I managed to disable in the past, is there a way to get this back into the new configuration without having it search for it if it's still listed in the Device Profile in SAFE mode?

Anything left over in the Device Profile is going to be useless information at this point, you may as well delete it, as it could interfere with the "real" hardware. I'm afraid there's no going back to it unless you reflash your BIOS and return it to the old configuration. Even then it will probably detect it all a third time, leaving more garbage in safe mode.

BUT, this old information MUST be residing in the REGISTRY (I think under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\enum). It would seem that there must be a way to copy it over into the CURRENT device profile. I'm having a specific problem with a motherboard device that I want to disable since it keeps freezing the system, but I can do it unless I can get a listing for it in the current configuration. There must be a way to do this in the registry. Otherwise, I don't know how to resolve my freezing device.

Sounds to me like there might be a flaw in your updated BIOS file.
I see what you are asking now, dunno how to do it though. Dunno if it will work if you do manage to do it. Good luck, however...

Tones2,
By my count you have at least three different topics going all about the same problem disguised as different issues. I was trying to help but after reading and replying and then moving on to another post I found info that wasn't consistent with what I had just read. This is why you should never post in multiple forums with the same problem.

Usually, the mods can catch this and stop the mess from happening but in your case, it usually takes several exchanges before you give us the info that tells us this is yet another post on the same problem. You have posted this as a Bad BIOS Flash problem, a USB problem, and here, a WinME configuration problem. Nearest I can tell, the only real issue you have is the USB2 device that locks up WindowsME when it is detected.

In the future, please put all info on your system/problem in one place--you will get better help.
