Here's the situation. I upgraded to a new system and re-installed Half Life so I could get back into playing Counterstrike. After installation the CD-Key input screen appeared. I entered the CD-Key, click O.K. and then the program locked up. It does this every time. I bought Half Life when it first came out and never had any problems on my old system. My specs are:

Intel P3 933MHZ
128 Megs of SDRAM
Seagate 20GB Hard Drive
Creative Labs Annihilator 2 32MB GeForce2
Diamond Monster Sound MX300
DirectX 8.0
Windows ME

I assumed something might have been wrong with my Half Life CD so I purchased the retail version of Counterstrike and un-installed Half-Life. The game installed fine, no problems with the CD-Key, the Valve intro plays without any problems. When I click on any of the options on the main screen the game locks up every time. I installed the version 1.1 retail patch, yet the problem persists.

Drivers for both the Diamond Monster Sound and the Annhilator 2 are the lastest from Creative Labs and the last Aureal update available. I've also tried Nvidia's reference drivers but the same thing happens. I've run Scandisk/Defrag/Virus Scan a few times and haven't seen any problems. Everything else installed on my system (No One Lives Forever, Baldur's Gate 2, Unreal Tournament and Red Alert2) runs without any problems.

Does anybody have any ideas on what might be causing CS and HL to lockup? I'm assuming that the problem is my video card.

What motherboard are you using now? Is it VIA based?

I dont have anything to offer...but
I installed H/L on my machines and installed the updates (which are bad if you have VooDoo3).H/L isnt the most stable application I have had the pleasure of installing. I finally have them all "working" ,but i reinstalled and updated a few times! Geeeez! even now when i play on the internet on one PC...pushing the "esc" dont bring you to the menu...Its the button that locks up your PC.

Whoah! That is certainly a ton of work for one game. :) Actually, it looks like the culprit is my sound card. I plan on replacing it in the next week or so I'll see what happens then. All I need CS for is my OGL modem team anyway.

I'd like to thank everybody who offered their thoughts on this thread your input is appreciated! Thank you very much.

Assault, this isnt relevant to you, but you might want to try it. It could a combination of your Geforce Card & sound card. Might save you buying a new sound card to soon.

This might help for other peeps using a geforce card and HL

Check this out
Q. I get problems with Half-Life. How can I fix them? (Geforce Cards) (http://www.geforcefaq.com/)

Also you should avoid certain Detonator Drivers as they cause HL to stuff up as well
(namely 7.17)
