Last night I decided to switch to Windows 2000 from a perfectly-working W98 installation, and after I finished (install W2000, M/B drivers, graphics drivers, etc), I tried to change the display size and color fromthe default 640 by 480, 256 colors to my own preferences (1024x768, 16-bit). However, the moment I hit Apply, the screen turns to a solid grey, showing only the mouse pointer. Of course, after 15 sec, the display reverts to the default settings.

Even using the graphic card utilities, I cannot go beyond 256 colors. The moment I try, I get the same grey screen. I even tried reinstalling W98 and everything worked fine.

Has anyone encountered this before?

Relevant system details:
M/B : ASUS CUSL2-C, PIII 1 GHz, 128 MB Memory
3D : ASUS V7100 Pure, 32 MB
Mon : Philips 105B
OS : Windows 2000 Pro, Business User, SP1
3D Driver: v 5.33a (latest from ASUS)

I would suggest you using the Nvidia 11.01 or the 12.00 drivers from www.3dchipsets.com (http://www.3dchipsets.com) Asus has old *** drivers on thier website and you don't have a deluxe revision of the card so there is no reason to stick with the Asus drivers. I have a v6600 pure running great with the 11.01.

The other thing to check is the driver for the monitor. Make sure it's set to your Monitor or at least another Name Brand Monitor and Not Plug and Play Monitor. The Standard driver can't handle refresh rates higher than Adapter Default.

I have nearly the same setup Asus V7100 pure running win2k Pro with 1101 Detonators and directX 8a. Runs great. Dont forget to change to standard vga before updating your drivers.

Ive never had any problems running the Asus 6.49 Drivers & directx 8

and im running std drvs @ 1024x768 with an 85hz refresh rate

Lycia, are you sure about the std monitor drvs not being able to display higher than the adapter default ( i can get 120hz @ 640 x 480) with a plug and play monitor.
