Beinga hardware/software tester, I was excited to test a Voodoo3 board in my personal system. I used a new harddrive with Win98 to have a totally clean install. Everything went smoothly. I like to play Ultima Online occasionally, and logged on to UO. Not 3 minutes in the game, my system locked up tight. I logged back in, same thing happened. I then fired up Baldur's Gate and *boom* not 5 minutes into this game, I freeze. So I installed a few more games that use similar engines and they ALL freeze within 10 minutes of running!! I ripped out the Voodoo3 and plopped in my trusty old Matrox G200, and had no more 2d lockups!! I find this to be outrageous! How long do we actually spend in 3d? Most of our time is spent doing 2d, on the desktop stuff. I did go get the newest Voodoo3 drivers from 3dfx, and I am in conversation with 3dfx. They are of the "it must be something you are doing" attitude. Heh, yup, I made the mistake of buying an overclocked Banshee labelled Voodoo3.

The only thing you can try is to change your drivers. Try generic driver (actually any you can find). Also make sure the card is not overheating and that the case has sufficient airflow! I had a similar problem with my TNT, driver fixed that one!
If you are running on a motherboard with an ALI bios, you might want to try the latest AGP drivers (http://www.ali.com.tw). Bewarned, the site is slooowwww!
