I have all these dosstart files in windows.
They number 001 to 999. Why so many? My other machine has only dosstart 001. Can I get rid of them, and how? http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/smilies/cwm23.gif

Those dosstart.xxx files are all backup copies of the real file, dosstart.bat. Dosstart.bat executes whenever you choose the restart in MSDOS mode. Typically, the file contains things like MSCDEX and your DOS mouse driver. Some drivers write changes to this file so you can use certain hardware in MSDOS mode. When it makes a change, it typically backs up a copy of the original dosstart.bat file as dosstart.bat.001, then dosstart.bat.002, etc.

So yes, you can delete any and all dosstart.001, .002, .003 etc files. The one you need to keep is dosstart.bat.

Cheers!
