Defrag trouble

Recently I tried to Defrag my computer. I started it at about 9p.m. one night and when I wole up it was still at 0%. it was about a 12 hour period, with nothing happening. Does it take longer than this to do? Is there something wrong? If you could please help me it would be appreciated, repley to EBA2001@hotmail.com.

P.S. I just want my computer to run better.

I never liked the Win9x (especially the WinNT) defrag. I use Norton Utilities' Speed Disk...it rocks. There may be some freeware out there, but I don't know what it is...sorry... http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/smilies/cwm30.gif

I have Windows 98SE and I too had trouble getting Defrag to work. It kept stopping and saying that some other program was accessing the hard drive and Defrag would quit. I tried using Control/Alt/Delete and shutting down all programs possible but still the same problem. Finally I rebooted into "Safe" mode and tried Defrag again and it worked perfectly.

I have to agree with the post from StevPorter the included defrag is not very affective the best I have found is also Norton Speed Disk

Yupp, better to use Norton instead of the old scandisk. Much more effective and error free.

A defrag could take a few hours,that's pretty normal if you got a large capacity drive and it haven't been defragged for a while. But 12 hours and still 0% http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/smile.gif Gimme a break...try Norton Speeddisk or something else than Windows defrag utility. There is a file on Win98 disk called defrag.inf in X:\Win98\tools\mtsutil
right click it then select install it will place an entry in the registry under runonce. When you reboot the machine defrag will run before any programs or TSR's. This reduces defrag time big time.

ok, heres what you need to do... Take that microsoft peice of @#$@#$ defrag program and delete it, smash it, crack it, whatever.. that is by far the WORST defrag program I have ever seen.

Go to www.goldenbow.com (http://www.goldenbow.com) download their defrag program try it out. I defrag'd a 50 gig harddrive that was 86% full with a 14% fragmentation in 1 hour!!!!

This program ROCKS! its cheap, and its well worth the money.. ( its only 40$) and thats all its really designed to do!

I almost feel bad about doing this shameless plug, but when I get a piece of software that works this well, I recommend to everyone..

Have to agree w/ Greasy , the Vopt defragger runs fast and does a good job.They have a free trial , and the purchase price is low. I like Norton Speed Disk also , but the registry stuff and Antifreeze are good things to stay away from.

Scutterboy gave good advice.

Something else to keep in mind, is that defrag will restart everytime it detects a 'change' with the file system. This can happen from power managment features kick'n in after a few minutes or a pagefile changing size. If your going to fun it from windows without using scutterboy's advice I'd recommend turning off all power managment features as well (inc. screen saver).

something that is happening and i searched the forums to see if anyone else wrote about this or not.
whenever i am filling out a form, it takes about 10-30 seconds for my insertion point to move to the next field. i could press TAB or just click. it still takes a while. and then when its time to submit the form, it takes anywhere between 1 minute to about 4 minutes for the form to send and process.
while its doing that, any other windows i have open, become inactive. i cant click on another window in the background to continue viewing that site.

whats wrong?
is my puter going to die?

its a PIII 450 @ 256RAM (hope that helps)

I might sound out of place but ...

Certain programs use copy protection technique where sectors are marked bad, but the program seeks the particular ones adn checks authenticity (particularly the older Indian language drivers for DTP use.) Although this may not be valid with you, do check up for such a possibilty otherwise with third party programs, you accidently wash out your key info and the program doing such a protection might not wirk at all. I tried Norton trial version two years back and lost my key info. I had to shell out money for getting it back. Do note this aspect to.

Something very important and simple no one's mentioned here:

Start up in Safe Mode!

Press F5 or F8 immediately after hitting the power button to turn machine on, tap it again a few times, and go into safe mode.

Run Scandisk first, then Run Defrag and shouldn't take more than an hour tops.

I never (ever, ever, ever) thought I'd use an analogy from Macs, but it's kind of like starting up without any extensions turned on. All your drivers revert back to their most primal settings, or don't get loaded, which frees up all the processing power you need to do a quick/easy defrag. Then just restart normally, and you'll be back to normal.

Why don't you just use MEs defrag. It's fast.
Dl it straight into your Windows directory. Name the old defrag DEFRAGOLD.exe and the new ME defrag the original name of the old one. It works great for me. Get it here:
