Could you nice people help me with a small problem.Being a newbie I have disturbed my settings regarding .dat files.Which program should they open with because mine at present are opening with Word 2000.I know this is wrong and any help would be wonderful.

If I remember correctly as long as the file still has a .dat extention you are ok. If you changed that you would not beable to run your machine because your registry is a .dat file. It sounds like all you did is create an association with your .dat to open with word. As long as you don't alter any of the files you will be ok.
If you want to kill the association you need to click Start>Settings>Folder options
then click the File Types tab
scroll through the list untill you find the .Dat entry and highlight it and click remove. This will remove the ability to open .dat file by clicking them. http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/smilies/cwm35.gif

HI,
.dat files can also be files to update your virusscaneer, I believe MCafee uses this extension.

"dat" is a very generic extension, it could be anything. I remember really old CD-ROM's contained videos as dat files, but other than that, I can't think of any specific thing a dat file could be.
