I built a new 750Mhz AMD Athlon system with a M800LMR PC200 system board. I installed Win 98 SE (the 20 dollar upgrade). I had to fomat my hard drive 3 times and install the drivers included with the mother board. The problem is that after everything is set up and installed, I can restart windows without a flaw, but if I try to shut down, windows locks up, and I end up in safe mode forever with no hope of the PCI bus drivers ever recovering. We now never shut down and we only restart.

Check out the advanced setting in your screen saver tab of screen properties. If Win98se is shutting off the hard drive at all it can't turn it back on which means you can't properly shut down. There's also a shutdown patch on the Windows update site which might help. If you are restarting in safe mode you should have the option of a normal boot. Try a normal boot. If it works your just have a TSR hanging the system up.

Just a suggestion, cause i don't know what bios you have but if bios has a bus master setting and you are using pci bus mastering drivers, usually the bios bus mastering must be disabled.
