Sound Problems!!

I recently added a Sony CD-RW CRX0811, which didn't seem to have a separate driver disk but was recognised by my computer (Compaq 400-AMD 400 MMX) Have had some fatal errors that I never had before but one thing I noticed is that my .WAV files will not play. I'm not sure the CD-RW had anything to do with it but that's when I noticed it. All my .WAV files were associated with REAL PLAYER so I associated them back to Sound recorder. But when I try to play a sound on the recorder it doesn't allow it. New .WAV files on the internet will not play either. I installed the latest drivers and changed alll the setting, I even made sure the volume was up. HELP Please it would be nice to hear again. <IMG SRC="smilies/confused.gif" border="0">

Does other sounds play, like midi for instance? If so, try this:

Try running add new hardware, tell it you do not want to search, and then choose on Sound Video and Game controllers. Choose Microsoft MCI and then Wave Audio Device.

I did what you said but no change. Maybe this tells you more. When I go to the control panel, sounds and try to paly a sound it has the following message, "Windows cannot play the c:\windows\media\Chimes.WAV file. It may be damaged or may not be a valid sound file. Replace the file and try again." But I can play that file in Media Player, and I have tried a new file gotten off the web with the same results. Strange?

Blue screen system errors that sometimes require hard shut-down.

Blue screens first methinks...I think 3 fingers is having a bad day. What are they by the looks the sound card isn't isntalled right, or could be a chipset issue. more info please
