Help! I have the opposite problem of some of you I have seen post with Win 98 SE shutdown issues. I have just built a Abit BE6-2 motherboard with Windows 98 SE. Everything is ok until I click Start and shutdown. Then the PC just powers down with no saving files or message that it's safe to power down or anything. Unfortunately when I restart the computer I have to reset the Processor setting in the bios and usually get a host of other errors. I have selected "no fast shutdown" as someone mentioned here, but still no help. I turned off the power management items in the Control Panel so no "sleep" mode occurs. Would the Shutdown patch I saw mentioned fix this? I have only seen it address "freezes or lockups on shutdown" not really fast shutdowns.
Thanks in advance... <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0"> rtudor@bellatlantic.net

Sounds like you have a different issue than fast shut down patch.Durring shutdown the system bios has no relation to the O/S.

You said you just built system ????
If this is correct,DID you clear the cmos before you powered on the system.This should be done on every new mpotherboard prior to first boot up,

1 disconnect all external power.{REMOVE POWER CORD FROM BACK OF COMPUTER.}
2 set cmos jumper to clear
3 return jumper to first posistion
4 connect power cord.
5 At first boot enter bios and make proper settings for all items reboot.

Now power to O/S and try a shut down.

thanks for all the replies. I tried the ide harddrive patch recommended and so far I have seen the Win 98 shutdown screen for the first time. It still seems a little fast, but I haven't had the corruption of the system as before yet. I will give it a few more days and see how it goes. Thanks again for all the excellent advice. I will let you know if it doesn't work..
