After reformatting my HD I have tried to reinstall W98 and it gets as far as the initial setup screen and then a 2"x4" black label comes up and everything stops. There is also a high pitched noise for a short time. What is happening and what do I need to do to correct?

Suggest you check that the BIOS antivirus[write protection warning] is turned offuntil the installation is finished.

The problem cannot be a virus protector as there is nothing loaded on the drive. It was partitioned and formatted so it is clean. Any other help would be apprecited.

Andy, Thanks for the help. Just reread your advice and changed the BIOS and windows is loading fine. This is the first time I have had to disable the Virus Protection so I am continuing to learn. Thanks again

Sadie another way to install win98 (& most other OS) is after the reformatting, copy the win98 folder from the win98 instalation disk to a folder on your HD and then install the program from the hard drive.

Glad to be of held Sadie.
Its not because youve written new software to the drive rather the master boot record has changed, due to the format you carried out,and the bios AV section thinks "i!i! theres a possible virus at work here,I`ll ask the owner if they want to continue" this displays a small black screen with something like"you Master boot record has changed do you wish to continue Y/N".

I would leave the cmos anti-virus off. It will creat more problems than it solves
