I have a client that has a Windows 98 machine. The close button in the top right-hand corner is not displaying an X, but rather a number! This is happening in the START/Programs too. Instead of there being an arrow pointing to the right there is the number 8!
I think something is wrong with the system fonts, but I don't know.
Please Help,
JKS

I know this won't be a help, but I had the exact same thing happen on my wife's W2K computer after she inadvertantly trashed the registry. After a while, W2K couldn't see any TrueType fonts. I copied them over from my computer, but this was just a "band-aid". Things continued to degenerate until I finally ended up doing a clean install of W2K... http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/smilies/cwm10.gif

Have you tried re-installing the GFX card?

Check for the presence of the Marlett font in the fonts folder. It's hidden so you can only see if it's there by dropping to DOS prompt and typing dir c:\windows\fonts /ah
The Marlett font contains all the pieces that are required to construct windows and dialogs, like checkmarks, dialog buttons etc.
Try extracting it from the original CD, replace it and reboot.

If it ain't broke, and you try to fix it anyway, then it WILL need fixing!

I will try the Marlet thing Monday when I have to visit the client again.
Thanks,
