How do I remove windows login box?

When I boot into Win98, I always get a login box which is really annoying. How do I get rid of it?

(The "security" is non-existant anyway so why do they even bother with the option on Win9x?? <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0"> )

i believe that setting the default log on to "windows logon" under network setttings, removing all users from the user settings (must press escape when presented with the log on box on start up), and setting user preferences to "all users use the same preferences" will solve ure problem. i may be wrong, but that sorts it for me.

Along with Mutant Grabbles' suggestions i'd try doing a search for *.pwl files and deleting them. Restart the machine and when the login comes up type 'default' (or whatever)for a user name and leave the password blank.

Since I haven't run under Win9x for a month of Sundays, I'm having to clear the cobwebs out of my brain to find the answer. I believe that you can go into the Windows folder and delete the password list file (.PWL) [maybe it would be better to rename it to .PWL.BAK]. The next time Windows starts and pops up the login box, just hit Enter to go past it. It shouldn't ask again. Also, I believe you can install TweakUI and eliminate the login box from there. You can get the latest version of TweakUI (v1.33) from here (http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,10615,17590,00.html).

Right clik network neighbor hood and then properties and change primary network login to WINDOWS LOGON instead of CLIENT FOR MICROSFOT NETWORKS!,plus the deletion of PWL files.........

In addition, make sure you go to control panel/passwords and under the user profiles tab click on "All users use the same profile...."

GUys - thanks for your responses

The story so far:

Set primary login to "Windows Logon" (instead of "Client for MS Network")
Made sure box checked for "All user use same personalised settings" in Passwords.
Deleted my pwl file.
Used TweakUI to automtaically log me on.
Restarted Win98 (haven't rebooted yet).

System now automatically logs me on, but problem is that I am now logged onto my system with my own name. I'm kind of paranoid about advertising stuff so would be preferred to be logged on a "nobody". Then all the sneaky spyware won't be able to get my name. (It annoys me that this spyware can get my name through my system logon and then welcome me by name and offer me exciting new "services" with a free trial and only $29.95 a month thereafter which is billed directly to my bank account without me knowing - how is this crap legal?!?! And no jokes about the types of sites I must be visiting <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">)

Maybe I'm being a bit *overly* paranoid...

So it works ok thanks to your help. Any further ideas how to remove login box *completely* would be much appreciated <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0"> Will try updating my TweakUI to see if there are any new options for removing login box...

That would work - but still looking to get rid of the box altogether. It's becoming a kind of mission now...

Another option would also be to remove the "Client for Microsoft Networks" altogether from your Network Properties, if you don't need it.

That would definitely prevent the login box from loading up <IMG SRC="smilies/tongue.gif" border="0">

I had the same problem on a machine which was specifically set to "Windows logon" and which had been purged of all .PWL files and it *still* asked for a login name and password.

Until (oh, dufuss me) I saw the Microsoft client in the list and deleted it (did not need it).

I don't know if I need it or not... I'm on a small LAN - I use the network to connect to other shared drives and the Linux box. If I took out the Client for Microsoft Networks would that mean I couldn't use the network at all?

You might still have access to shaerd drives if they were mapped from your local PC but not if they are mapped as part of your login script (or profile in this case).

As for the Linux box, I sincerely don't know... Are you using Samba or something like it?

Check with your Network Manager before attempting anything of this nature, though.

I have tried everything . even going to password and changing it to just the blank login and clicking ok. Nothing seems to work. just stuck
