I have a compaq with a 56k HPS micromodem in it. When attempting to connect to AOL, i hear it dial the number, but then it doesnt communicate at all, it just sits there until eventually a dialogue box comes up that says "unable to find dial tone" I know that it is plugged into a working phone line. I also know that i am using working access numbers to connect to aol. I noticed that under the network adapters section, there are many of them. They are:
aol adapter
aol dial-up adapter
dial-up adapter
dial-up adater #2 (VPN support)
Microsoft Virtual Private Network Adapter

I dont think i need all of these, but i am not sure which ones to remove. I am nto on a network, and i am pretty sure that i can remove all but aol dial-up adapter but i wanted to get some feedback first. Thanks for all of your help, it is appreciated.

If you remove any of them, AOL will just put them back the next time you try to launch it.

get rid of AOL and find a local Providor.

Its not my computer. I am fixing it for a friend. I am on @home cable.

Try using dialup networking, use either another ISP, or dial the second phone line in the house(if there are two) just to see if Windows, the modem (physically) and the modem drivers are all communicating. If that works, the problem is in AOL's software, call Tech support. The dude you are helping is paying good money for that crap, AOL should be asked to earn it.

If it doesn't work, monkey around with the drivers for the modem, perhaps an update is in order, and use dialup networking to test first. Once it is working, Then go into AOL and work things out there...

I hate these Micromodem riser cards...in my opinion bin it and go for a decent hardware modem. I have just had soooooooo many problems with these HSP POS's....and combined with AOL...jeez...glutton for punishment <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">

Depending on the model Compaq has released a series of new drivers for their PC's. I just updated the modem driver on a Presario 5000 series yesterday morning. Don't know if it helps or not.

First off, thanks to all who responded. I found it easier to just buy a new modem since they are pretty cheap. I just put it in and all was well. Solves that problem w/ a lot less hassle. Thanks again though for all responses.

Agreed, ive had nothing but problems with these modems not connecting (not only to aol) replace with a good modem, no more problems, just my .02 worth

In the small sub division I live in there are only 2 (and he just switched after XMas) of 14 houses that doesn't have AOL. I've made quite the cottage industry of helping with AOL problems. I refer to it as "Again Oh Lord"! <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> I just don't get it.
