I have 16 machines in one of the labs here at the high school: four gateway e-4200s and twelve gw e-1400s. Because they have different mobos I have seperate Ghost images for the two types of machines.They all have a 6 gig drive split in half with partition magic. I copy the Ghost image to the extended partition so if it has a meltdown when we have netwok probs I can still rebuild the machine without having to multi-cast.OKAY! so i'm gettin'a little long winded here :)My question is this: I have rcently upgraded all the machines to Office 97 Pro and want to update my ghost image. When I try to defrag the machine that I have cleaned up (after disabling McAfee)at about 28% it stalls and tells me defrag cannot contiue due to disk write.Run scandisk.I do and run defrag...same error. We're running acad and 3d studio and your typical array of MS stuff; win98, office97 firstclass e-mail.i know anti-virus software can reek havoc with defrag...but what else could be writing to the disk?
p.s. i really just don't want to rebuild any of these machines from scratch....nowatimeen? ;)

Have you killed everything running in the background, I know Office 97 has Office Startup and findfast run the background. If you haven't already then hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and kill everything but systray and explorer and run defrag again.

Three things you can try.
Boot to safe mode and run defrag from there.
On the Win98(I know it's on the 98SE disk)installation disk go to Tools/mtsutil and get the defrag file. If you right click on it you have the option to install. Click it, this loads a Defrag.Ini file into the RunOnce folder in the registry. Reboot and Defrag runs before the TSR's load.
Use Ctl/Alt/Delete to bring up window and shut off everything but Explorer and you may need Systray. Run Defrag.

FYI...you can edit your mistakes by clicking on the icon with the paper and pencil top/left on your original post...
