I would like to know how to force Windows 95 to use its own drivers and not MS-Dos compatability mode drivers. I have tried re-installing Windows 3 times now but for some reason my C Drive still uses Dos Drivers, and I get all the useless information in the performance tab. I have deleted my autoexec.bat and config.sys files but that achieved nothing .... is there an easy way to prevent Dos drivers being used, or do I have to keep formatting my drive until I get lucky and Windows uses it brain not to install them <-- Could be a while. I had the same problem on my other machine but I had compatability mode problems on all my drives, inc CDROM, but for some reason is worked fine the 3rd time I formatted. Is there a specific way to go about installing Windows 95? I use the boot disk provided and use it to format my drive after I fdisk it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated peoples, thanks.

What does device manager say about your IDE controller? If Windows did not properly setup the controller you will be stuck in compatibility mode until you update the driver or resolve any conflicts.

AS far as I can see there are no conflicts with anything. Something which I noticed was rather strange is that during the install process I set up and install my network adapter (An Acer 10MB PCI card, with latest drivers) because for some reason if I dont and try installing it seperately later the device always fails no matter what I do. The last time I tried formatting and re-installing Windows I forogt to install the network adapter and I didnt get the Compatability mode problem, but was stuck with not having any Network because my network adapter kept saying "Device failed". To test this theory reformatted again and installed the network adapter, and recieved the compatability mode problem, but my network card installed fine (Actually it installed 2 copies of the Network adapter, one was fine, the other was causing a conflict, which I removed). So its a case of out of the frying pan and into the fryer ... any ideas with this new problem.

could be a bad NIC ( Network Interface Card ) or the drivers are not being installed properly by the system.
Does it work without the NIC????
If it does then change the card for a 3COM or some major brand one which rarely give trouble.
Also go into the registry and search for NOIDE. When/If found , change the value for it from 01 to 00 then restart the system, making sure any real mode drivers are removed from the autoexec.bat & config.sys.
Also try uninstalling the Busmaster drivers, if installed

Ok, I think I have this problem sorted out. To get around this strange problem I installed Windows without any Network support whatsoever, and didnt get any compatability modem problems. But for some reason Windows didnt recognise my network card upon booting up, and if I manually added the drivers for it, that was when I had the device failure problems. So I changed the network cards PCI slot and Windows detected it no worries and all is well. Must be a faulty PCI slot or PNP Bios isnt working too well, alternatively it could well be the Network card itself, but it's working for now and thats all I care about. Thanks for all your help with this one.
