HELP!!!
Ok, here's the setup... FIC VA-503+ Mobo with "ECO037" sticker, 128 MB SDRAM, Win95B (No, I don't want to upgrade due to some old DOS-based software requirements)

The system runs great with an Intel Pentium 233MMX. I am trying to upgrade the system to aa AMD K6/2-500. I keep getting a Windows Protection error NTKERN. The system will not fully boot into windows. When i attemo to go into Safe Mode, I get a windows protection error IOS.

I have already downloaded and installed the amdk6update from Microsoft and it did not help. Heat should not be an issue since I run a VERY large cooling fan and heat sink and since after trying to get the chip to run for ten minutes, and swapping back to my 233, the chip was barely warm.

What steps can I do to troubleshoot this from here? I've thought about flashing my bios to bring it current (it's about 1 yr old) but supposedly the 500 chip is supported by my rev.

Does anyone have any ideas???

If possible try underclocking the system down to 300MHz or below and installing the windows patch.

If that doesn't help, try a clean reinstall of windows with the chip underclocked, install the patch and clock it back up. If it works underclocked but not at rated speed, return the chip and get a replacement.

The error messages sound exactly like win95b without the AMD patch installed. Maybe it didn't install correctly.
Good luck.

I think you probably did the patch correctly. I would look into the NTKERN. If I remember right, the last time I had something like this I extracted it from DOS. But if that still does not work then I think I would try underclocking it and reloading the patch. Once you get in safe mode try uninstalling anything USB and rebooting into Windows and reinstalling. I want to say that Ntkern is usb related but then again I have been wrong before

There seems to be something wrong with my keyboard. I can't find the "any" key!

Everyone, thanks for all the help. I feel like a complete jerk, but a fellow tech-friend just emailed me the following "fine print" off Microsoft's site regarding the AMD processors.

"NOTE: Versions of the Amdk6upd.exe update dated "09/18/98 11:00am" do not replace the Ntkern.vxd file in OSR 2.1 and OSR 2.5. To determine the version of the Ntkern.vxd file installed on your computer, right-click the Ntkern.vxd file in the Windows\System\Vmm32 folder, click Properties, and then click the Version tab. If the version number is not 4.03.1213, you should obtain and install a new version of the update, as described below. Note that the version of the original Ntkern.vxd file is 4.03.1212."

Naturally, I was using a copy of the AMDK6UPD.EXE that I had downloaded almost a year ago for a client's machine! Just goes to show that Microsoft can't even keep it's updates straight, not to mention thier OS! I guess we all might want to download the newest update file.

Thanks again!
