This has been an ongoing problem for me the last few days.
I am trying to load win98 (not se) in a preload fasion onto a 17.2 gig Seagate Medalist. I am using an Asus P5a-B with 128mb ram and an AMD k6-2 550 (yes, I bought the 550, though I probably should have just bought an athlon instead)

The problem I am having is:
Durring installation I am gettin the blue screen of death durring the final step of installation where it updates system settings.
I can restart after that and when windows goes to start up I get a protection fault error and have to restart.

Could somebody lend me a hand?

Windows 98 install is the best hardware tester I have ever seen. If there is anything that even resembles a possible hardware problem win98 will give you trouble.

I would try going into the bios and turning off the USB and the onboard sound, if yours came with it. Also, strip any cards out of it you may have put in. If this does not work I usually will put the ram in the opposite slot. Asus boards, for some reason, seem to be picky about that. At least the p5sb's are. And, double check your jumpers.

There seems to be something wrong with my keyboard. I can't find the "any" key!

Larommi is right, if 98 install flakes out half way through, you can basically start swapping hardware.

Is this a NEW P5a-b? You can try flashing bios with the latest, just released 5/31/00 http://www.asus.com.tw/products/motherboard/bios_socket7.html

Hope this helps

I would take everything out of the computer excet for the video card, then try the setup again. also ck the brand of your memory, if it is USA (brand) there is a compatability problem with some of the Asus, and Simtec M/B's
