I have been carrying out support work for a primary school.

When you attempt to start Paint, the following message is reported.

This program has performed an illegal operation. Details are mfc42.dll caused an invaild page fault.

Any suggestions for a fix without reinstalling Win 98. I have already tried to uninstall and reinstall Paint without this curing the problem.

Paint does not control MFC42.dll.

The easiest thing to try is to log out of windows to the dos prompt -> delete the MFC42.dll file from windows\system directory and install the service pack from Microsoft which will then re-install a new version of the MCF42.dll file.

another way to get the MFC42.DLL file fresh off the the Win98 CD is to use the extract command. if you need to know how to use the extract command in DOS, just get to a DOS prompt and type: extract /?

That will give you a list of command line switches that use can use to extract the file from one of the cabs.

to copy it from the Win98 CD you would type the following:
extract /a /y /l c:\windows\system base4.cab mfc42.dll

This is assuming that DOS is focused on the CD-ROM drive at the time.
