Am running on a thinkpad 770e w/ windows98. Am trying to run windows update. When I get to update page I get the msg "Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page" I checked; my settings are medium security. I went to the MSN KB page which says run "regsvr32 /u c:\windows\system\wuv3is.dll" and got the msg it couldn't load library. I tried deleting wuv3is.dll per the KB's instructions and it couldn't be found. Any idea as to what has happened?

It's possible that you (or someone else) has customised the security settings in IE.
You could change the browser to a lower security setting just for the update process (or reset the medium setting to default through 'security-> custom -> restore default' probably).
The wuv3is.dll file wasn't on your system when you ran 'regsvr32....etc', so you got the 'missing library' message. You can't delete a file that isn't there.

If the low security settings don't work for ya try adding that web site into the Trusted sites. Under Internet Options, Security Tab click on the Trusted Sites Icon. Click on the button that says Sites and then http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/*.* and UNCHECK the box labeled 'Requires server verification (https http://www.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/smile.gif for all sites in this zone' at the bottom. Then close IE and reopen it and try again.

I just developed the same problem after I downloaded some of the critcal updates after I rebooted. I was wishing someone else maybe had the same problem and found out how to fix it. Maybe you still can call the manufacturer for free phone support?

Well I found the fix for my problem. My IE5 files were corrupted and I needed to reinstall it. Try going into add and remove programs in control panel click on Internet Explorer5 or the most updated one click on add remove tab click on add components click on Visual Basic Scripting Support follow the rest of their instructions but if you have my luck you need to totally reinstall it from wher you originally got it if that isn't possible Use this address to download it good luck. http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/iebuild/ie501_win32/en/136816.htm
