Windows 98 is taking 5 minutes just to startup

i have recently upgraded to a K6 3 500
and ever since i have, i have had to wait approx 5 minutes for windows to start.
i have checked all the obvious things like drivers & hardware conflicting, but everything is OK.
I am running out of idea`s, if you have any simple suggestions, please e-mail me

I have 2 suggestions

a)It may be searching for an IP address, assign one in network/tcp/ip i.e 192 168 0 1
255 255 255 0

b)Boot up in DOS and type at c:\scanreg to use a previous good registry (The one you are using may have corrupted, This has happened twice to my son)

Check the voltage for your CPU. K6-3 use 2.4 instead 2.2.

Flash Bios and update drivers for Bus Mastering.

For info, Nightlords problem was a faulty network card. Please confirm Nightlord

Windows 98 doesn't usually load the IP address at startup. There could be Ram shortage. Try scandisk and defrag. check the startups, see what's it loading, take out lines that you do not need. Check the config.sys, autoexec.bat, win.ini, and system.ini to see if there are any errors.
You could try reinstalling Windows, I mean by deleting the entire Windows directory.

Here's another suggestion to try.

Is your system a clean installation?..eg: just windows and drivers no other applications installed?
If not type MSCONFIG at the run window and choose selective startup and uncheck the startup menu.

Also check your bios settings for your disks and make sure they're set to their optimum settings...

You might also check other bios settings and make sure they're all set to optimum settings as well.
