Help! I just bought a brand new (name brand) AMD 1Ghz w/ WinME. It is constantly locking up! I have checked the video drivers, disabled sleep settings, took out the Ultra ATA100 controller (HDD on the MoBo now), tested the HD, re-installed OS, and still can't find the problem. They will take over 3 weeks to get me a replacement, so I would like to try to figure out what is wrong with this one instead. Any clues??
Aggrevated and tired,

First what kind of cooling do you have for that 1 ghz beast? If it's not good enough your chip is probably over heating. To see if that's the problem drop the clock speed some. If you don't think that's the problem up the voltage to the chip and ram. Sometimes a boost to the ram helps.

maybe the ram is not compatible or is bad ram or just needs to be re-seated ? try a different mouse and keyboard also.try switching how you have the mouse and keyboard plugs in the back of your box? start removing devices one at a time, modems, nic's,tv tuner cards, etc etc.well, these are what i would try,you may have already tried these, but good luck.

Jena, don't be afraid to name names here. It might help if we knew the make. Is it locking up in Internet Explorer? Many people have reported that problem, and i don't know if anyone has figured it out yet. Are you reinstalling winME thru the cab files on the hard disk? If so, try it off the cdrom.(maybe a corrupted file). After you have tried slowing down the processor as was suggested, see if you can get your hands on a win98se and install it,as some of the drivers have not had all the bugs for winME worked out yet. Also, if you have addin cards for modem, sound etc. try taking them out, also the ata100 controller, reload ME and see if that helps.

I hope nobody gets mad at me when I say this but, If you say that the machine is new and it will take them 3 weeks to replace then I would demand you speak to a manager in their cust. service dept and demad that you get a new machine.
I mean come on, If you have had that machine for a small period of time then I dont see why it would take them 3 weeks for a response.
If they want to keep you as a cust. then they will agree and keep you satisfied.
The way the pc market is right now, any pc maker knows that any cust is a good cust.
No one can afford to have bad cust service. If they dont want to help you out then demand your money back and then come to San Antonio and I will help you out personally.
I beleive that almost everyone else that uses this forum will be happy to help you out as well. (right guys/gals)

Well, if anyone is that interested it was a Gateway. And I had such good luck with my little P2-300 I got from them a couple of years ago. I am shipping this one back, and pray the next one works. If not I will scrap the whole idea and make do with that little P2! Thanks for all the advice.
And yes, their manager will be hearing from me, since my sales rep has been less than responsive.
