I am using an HP CD-Writer Plus, with Adaptec's formatting software.

When I format a new CD-RW, the Adaptec software reports a successful format, but when I use Win Explorer it reports the disc has no data and no space. If I try to copy to the disc, Windows says I can't.

But if I re-boot, Win Explorer shows the normal capacity for a completely formatted disc (about 532 MB), and I can copy files to it.

BUT...! If I try to run either Simple Trax or Backup Exec, the program reports that it cannot write to the CD-RW! If I immediately go to Win Explorer, I CAN copy to the disc!!

I've tried re-installs of both the CD Writer
and Adaptec's software, but to no avail.

I'd appreciate any help... I've got some vital backups to do!

You can try playing with the CD DRIVES data transfer settings.

GO to system properties, device manager, cdrom and try changing the use DMA settings.
ALSO go to system properties, performance, file system,CDROM Drive and change the access pattern to NO READ AHEAD. You might find a setting that works on your machine.

Good Luck.
