Here's a strange one... I have Deleted the partions and created new ones 4 times on a compaq 5735 and ran the restore cd... All goes well except that after it is done, I go to click on any icon, and nothing happens, I can open the start menu, but I click and nothing happens... I go to run and typed in C:\windows\sol.exe and it opens and you can play...But if I click, start, settings control panel... nothing... What the F**k??? Any Ideas....( I Hate Compaq)

{compaq engineer head on}

There's nothing better than a broke compaq!!! anyway, is this win9x or NT?
i presume the restore cd sets up the various partitions, one of which is the "setup"?

a little more info would be helpful...

Have you checked for bugs? Did you fdisk /mbr when you redid the partitions?

seems like you have hit a presario winner. Best suggestions is to tell the customer that it will cost too much to fix and have them buy a new one. Either that or replace the system board. That might fix everything

I know this is going to sound completley stupid, but I have acutally seen this with my own two eyes, What kind of keyboard are you using? I have seen one do something similar to what you are speaking of. But when you hooked up a Compaq keyboard, and ran the recovery it worked fine. I dont have any expalnation of why, bit it honestley worked. If that doesnt do it I would try another hard drive (just to test it out)
Good luck and let us know.

And please... when you're finished I want to know if it was the keyboard. Talk about a proprietary system. I believe I will just have all the knowledge for a proper tech support call if I hear the keyboard was the problem... oh good ole compaq

Well to let all know, I just fdisked it one more time and pulled the compaq partion, ran a clean install of 98se and downloaded drivers for the hardware, so now it thinks it's a real pc instead of a compaq :-)
Funny, I thought about the keyboard thing, but thought, naw.... how silly would that be, but now it makes total sense, especially when dealing with a non sensical company... Thanks for the response

All I can tell you is to peel the Compaq label off the case and whisper very quietly into the fan, "you're not a real Compaq anymore" then try it.

But seriously, have you tried running the recovery disc again, because those don't always work right.
