Is there any programs that can run in the background of windows that can suck up bandwidth, slowing down your cable speed on the internet?

I'm going to assume this is a problem you're having, rather than something nasty you want to do to somebody...

-All forms of spyware - check out AdAware
-P2P sharing software such as AudioGalaxy, Napster, Bearshare. If people are downloading from you, this could affect your connection.
-Viruses and Trojans, esp. DDOS Zombie programs. Do you have a proper firewall and antivirus protection? If not, get your machine checked out.
-"junk" programs like BonziBuddy running in the background.

-there are other potential problems as well, but these are the most common ones I run into! Good luck.

A cheap or old video card will slow you down to in the net. The net is composed of lots of graphics, etc. Just something to keep in mind.

Hope it helps. <IMG SRC="smilies/tongue.gif" border="0">

My Juno Gold - soon to merge with NetZero & be call United Online. normally says it connects at 49.3; Cnet's bandwidth checker says anything from 21 to today's 45k.

Anyway in the aggreement, it syas that they can use whatever part of the connection that they feel like, & maybe even force your computer to logon.

banners will also suck bandwidth, before I upgraded to Gold, & v.90; 1 got bandwidth reports in the teens. the banner sucked about 10k or a third of the bandwidth 26.4 was the normal 'reported' connect rate.

A cheap nic or a nic sharing an IRQ will. also, try running some of the programs on DSL Reports. I would not pay attention to the speed of your connection so much as losing packets. Everytime you lose a packet it needs to be retransmitted and the more you lose the slower you get. DO NOT USE cable tweaks. More times than not they do more harm than good. I tried many of them and always reverted back to default settings.

By the way having all your neighbors on at the same time does not help either. Remember with cable you are sharing with the neighborhood.
