When my wifes computer starts up she gets a dos prompt and the computer stops. the error message that is posted says...
himem.sys is missing make sure that it is in the windows directory.
we go to the directory and its there but it still does it. we have to copy it over from a floppy disk before it will reboot.
we tried reinstalling windows to fix it but it still does it. so now we have to do this floppy thing every time. is there a way to fix this its really annoying?????

thanks

I have the same problem on my machine at work, but it will boot fine if I do a cold boot, power off and everything. I'd love to know how to fix it. I've just been going around it because I haven't had time to figure it out. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help...

Try editing the file "config.sys" on folder "C:\>" From DOS you type in
"edit C:\config.sys" or from Windows, open up notepad (not Wordpad), go to open file, and then type in "C:\config.sys". Go to the top line (EMPTY LINE) and type in:
"DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS(WINDOWS DIRECTORY)\HIMEM.SYS(WHERE HIMEM.SYS IS LOCATED)"

After that, reboot the computer, in most cases that works. If it does not work, leave a note at the bottom.

It didn't work

when I do a step by step to see what hangs it runs the config.sys file and the line for himem.sys. it gets an error after that line. that goes a little something like this. error: unable to control a20 line!
xms driver not installed. then of course the next halt is when it says win95 missing himem.sys. this is a digital 3010 computer 300 Mhz pentium II by the way.

thanks if you can help more.
