I have several Gateway computers that won't shut off automatically after you shut Windows 98 down. This happened after I had to re-install Windows, so I know it is just a setting somewhere. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas. Thanks.

If these are Windows 98SE machines, Microsoft has a shutdown patch for it on their website
Or you can try the tip below

SHUT DOWN WINDOWS 98 FAST!

When you shut down Windows 98, you have to go through several steps. I've discovered a way to shut down Windows 98 in one simple double-click. To implement this technique, launch the Create Shortcut wizard by right-clicking on the desktop and selecting the New/Shortcut command from the shortcut menu. Once the Create Shortcut wizard loads, type
c:\windows\rundll.exe user.exe,exitwindows
in the Command Line text box. (Make sure that there isn't a space between the comma and the exitwindows parameter, or the command won't work.) To continue, click Next. When the next page appears, type Shut Down Windows 98 NOW! in the Select a Name for the Shortcut text box, and click Finish. Now, when you're ready to shut down Windows 98, close all your applications as you normally would and then just double-click the new Shut Down Windows 98 NOW! icon.

Is there a command to shutdown Windows 98SE from the task scheduler? I have my system kick on at 6:00am to up date webpages and grap mail so when I get up I can check them before leaving. And then again at 6:00Pm before I get home.

I like to turn it on the download and shut off.

Make the icon as shown above, then add it to your task scheduler.

Check the windows 98 update site. I had the same problem on a bunch of systems here and after a quick check I found they have a shutdown supplement on their site. I applied it and the problem seems to have gone away.
