Cool problem.
To avoid the problem just right-mouse-click on the link and choose the "Save target as" option. Then you can download it.
It sounds like your browser is SNAFU'd somehow. First I'd try upgrading the browser to see if that fixes it. If not, I'd uninstall and reinstall the bowser.

also check file associations, sounds like you may have associated zip or exe files with notepad / wordpad. Open my computer and click view, file options, file types and scroll through looking for anything associated with notepad / wordpad (the program that IE opens) and check the file extension that it is associated with. If it is exe or zip remove the reference and reinstall your unzip utility (ie. winzip)

thank you for your replies. what had happened is my mshtml.dll, urlmon.dll and my wininet.dll,.... all had the wrong versions. this caused a major conflict on my computer. the correct versions i am suppose to have is 5.50.4522.1800 or greater. the closest i could get is 5.50.4134.100. I am still looking for the other version cause as long as i dont have them i can not run my IE xplorer repair tools. But, at least i can surf the net and down load programs again.
thanks again,
Rich
