someone please help! i'm constantly receiving a "disk wtite error" on my second computer. it all started with an installation of a new printer. i have recently found out from the company that the printers cause the bios to create a "phantom" usb port and therefore can not be installed properly. i've tried almost everything (scandisk, etc.) anf nothing's working. would it be feasible to wipe out the drive and start over? is there any other way to correct the problem? i uninstalled any printer info/drivers that managed to make it's way onto the 'puter, but the HD is crashing and burning fast!! as an update to this problem; i have tried repeatedly to run scandisk but to no avail. i also used went into the msconfig program and still nothing happens to corred the problem. how can i get scadisk to function properly?! http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/smilies/cwm45.gif

This probably won't help.

The company acknowledges that a problem exsists; but didn't offer a way to put it back to normal. DOesn't sound like a product that I would like to own. Threats don't normally work with low-level techs... maybe you can catch my drift. if you don't have much on your machine; the restore disk option may be considered a good one. I use it to reset retail machines; but don't like to use it as an ongoing option.

i tried the "fix my kids' machine or else" line but i do have great patience (until now). someone suggested resetting the CMOS jumper, what do you think? short of nuking the drive, i need to try anything..thanks

sounds similar to the problem i had with a HP 815 C (worked better under win98 than win ME) http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/smilies/cwm5.gif

I would fdisk the drive and see if the problem persists. I just might be chance that the Hard drive went bad while installing that. I had a hard drive do that during an install and it never stoped having errors. I even Zero filled it(That is Filling every sector of the HD with a 0 starting with sector 0) It completly wipes the Hard drive so its like factory again.
