I never had this problem until I went from IE 4 to 5 and now almost everytime I right click on a picture and choose "Save picture as" it wants to save it as untitled.bmp What the hell is going on here? It mostly likes to do it when I click on a thumbnail and go to save the actual size picture, but it has done it in other circumstances too. I could possibly understand if the picture actually were a bitmap but none of them are. I'm using Win ME right now, but it also did it with 98 and 98SE. Is there maybe a patch or something I can do to the registry to fix this? It's not a serious problem, it's just highly annoying. Thank you in advance for any help.

The default 'save as' is now NOT always .jpg, and I'm guessing you could be trying to save a hyperlinked graphic? If you 'experiment' with different graphics, using the 'Save Picture as' you WILL be presented with .bmp as an option, BUT, also as a .gif. .jpg. or whatever, the actual graphic qualities are?
But, you won't (I haven't come across it yet anyway?) be able to save it as .jpg by default? you will, be given the option of .bmp PLUS the actual format, or, in a hyperlinked, or Java scripted graphic, then .bmp is the sole option!!

Actually like I said it only lets me save it as a bitmap, I don't get the option of jpg gif or any other, and while yes the problem does occur the most with a hyperlinked image it also does it with just any other normal image. I have a bunch of pictures up on one if my sites and none of them are tumbnailed or hyperlinked and if I right click and pull up the images list or get the properties of the picture itself it will give me the correct name but when trying to save them it will only let me save as untitled.bmp. It's highly annoying.

what are your default programs for opening .jpg and .bmp files? perhaps another image editing program has changed the defaults, and it only applies to ie5?

I agree with techs check your default file for opening jpeg etc i alwasys forget to uncheck the "always use this program to open these files" anyways i hve used IE 4,5,5.1and 5.5 and never had this problem most times it depends on the file type the web site author has used if the pic has been posted as a gif then IE should save it as a gif have a look in your tempory internet folder to see what file types you have

I know for certain it has nothing to do with any image editing program or anything like that but thank's for the suggestion. Basically the problem happens from the second I start using the browser, it doesn't make a difference even if I've just done a clean install of my os on a new drive ir still does it. I've even gone as far as to rule out the possiblity of some sort of hardware problem.. it's very strange indeed.

It never had this problem with IE4, I don't know what the difference would be. I got the update from IE4 to 5 from the Windows update site, and now I'm running ME so it just kinda came with the OS. As for my video driver I got it from the official ATI site, I have an ATI 3D Rage pro PCI, not the best card, but it works. I've noticed lately that it does it more when I click on a thumbnail and try to save the larger picture than when I click on a normal hyperlink, but in either situation if I choose to "save target as" it will save it as the proper name and extention. I've also gone as far as copying the shortcut for the linked pictures and then pasting it into a new browser session and trying it that way and still nothing. Also I've checked to see if it wasn't some sort of java or cgi script each time and it's not. It's almost totally random.
