Ok here is the "Cliff's Notes" version of my prob.

#1. Every time I try to install some software. (logitech quickcam and zonealarm) I get a registry error every time. I can uninstall it and install another app or prog then reboot and I will get no error but if it is one of these programs I will get a registry error. I have cleaned the registry with cleansweep and various other reg cleaning apps but still no luck.

#2 I am unable to delete email in outlook express 5.0. when I try to delete a mes it does nothing. If i try to view the del items folder it says that it could not view this folder because of low disk or memory. Both of which are fine.

I have tired all the "magic" I have but I am stumped. Do any of you gurus have any ideas.

Thanks

First port of call would be to check for Viruses from a clean boot disk and a DOS virus scanner.

Done. No viri have been detected. I was able to get a clean registry after removing the offending programs: zonealarm and the quickcam software and its cohorts (realplayer, adobe acrobat, direct x, netmeeting). Still can't delete emails though. I relly need to find a solution to my problem because my wife doesn't understand and could care less about registry errors just as long as her camera works and she can send email. Sheez, women!

you'd catch hell if you say that near a woman tech ...

but here's my tip:

Registry corruption can be a result of a few things but the most part is usually Bad RAM or incorrect RAM timing (and mixing types)

if it's windows 98 boot to command prompt (F8 and option 5 from the boot menu)
and type scanreg /fix

Thanks for the info condor. That was one of the first steps I used before hitting the forums for advice. It's puzzling because as soon as I remove the software everything is fine, no errors. I can install another app in its place and I will not get an error. It just seems like the Ol' PC just doesn't like that software.

Restore the User.dat and SYS.dat files, however this will bring the system back to the origional config when it was setup. So backkup the data, PST files in email and user desktop settings.

I have unisntalled video drivers and other apps and still found them in the regestry.
I type MSCONFIG after the Run command and under Startup check if there is any "Stuff" that needs to be removed. If so deselect box and apply.
Also it sounds like a virus or bad memory with the messages your getting.

The email stuff back it up uninstall and reinstall.

Is it possible that you have an antivirus program running while you're installing the software? Norton especially needs to be shut down during installs a it sees anything that writes to the registry as being virus type activity. I've seen it do everything from stop an install in it's tracks to fubar it to the point you can't do anything with the program you just (attempted to) load.

Good luck!

I would agree.

Make sure that you have all programs closed before installing new software. I would stay away from the registry as much as possible. How ever, before you have to reload this PC, try and REINSTALL windows instead of formatting and install windows all over again. Normally when this is done it sets everything back to it's default value in the registry. But, it could be completely hosed. If you have an easy way of backing up your system I would advise backing it up and formatting.

reply if probs
