Got a customers pc here, Windows 98se stops loading. goes into safe mode fine.
checked bootlog, it seems it freezes after loading the ifsys stuff before it continues onto the VMM section. Already swapped ram.

Any suggestions??

The two things I would try is:
A. Goto into safe mode, run msconfig and disable every program that starts up.
B. Goto into safe mode and see if there are any hardware duplicates, if so delete both. Or you can just delete the ENUM keys in the registy which will remove all hardware.

Run msconfig and choose the advanced functions. Select the video 640x480 option then try rebooting normally. If it completes the boot (which i suspect it will) then the problem is in your video drivers.

Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes.

In safe set windows to default, if that does not work do a step by step confirmation and see where it glitchs.

if there are files damaged you may need to reload.

ALWAYS HAVE BACKUP!!!!

Rename the win.com and the command.com files dont reboot now reinstall win 98 in the same dir works in most cases and does not replace the customers files ie no reformat it just reloads the windows files.

If you do decide to reinstall, you don't need to rename command.com, just win.com and when prompted for an install path change c:\windows.000 to c:\windows
