(my boss has been switching the kb and mouse all last week--he IS an idiot). thridly what kind of mouse is it? brand? ------------------ prompt$p$g [dos = elite] techs October 13th, 2000, 11:25 AM some mobos let you disable the ps/2 mouse port, and some let you enable a usb mouse, and without telling you disable the ps/2 port. t tracyl68 October 13th, 2000, 11:54 AM It is a serial mouse. It has been working all along and all of a sudden this message comes up. Every now and then it locks up and rebotting the system takes care of the problem. I have never had this message before. DonJ October 13th, 2000, 12:00 PM I've seen this problem before. It was traced to a defective COM port. Also, if the mouse is fairly old, it could be going bad itself. The easiest step would be to try another mouse or install the questionable on into another system. You might also check Device Manager and make sure that there are no conflicts with other COM ports such as modems, etc. Hope this helps you out...Good Luck! DonJ tracyl68 October 13th, 2000, 12:53 PM If it happens to be a ps2 mouse, is it the same problem? I'm not at that computer right now, I'll actually be checking after work. They have put in a different mouse, so it could very well be the port. Can a new one just be added easily? Thanks again for your help. skut October 13th, 2000, 02:21 PM can a new what be added just as easily? a new ps2 port? or just the mouse? in my experience, most serial mice work best when you install the drivers. ive even had some msoft mice not work b/c the drivers werent installed. as aforementioned, check in device manager to see if there are any irq, or com port conflicts. also check the bios to see if the com port the mouse is using is enabled (normally com1--depending if your modem is on com2). also if your mouse is on com1 and you put a modem in on com2...that could cause some problems. ------------------ prompt$p$g [dos = elite] weazel October 14th, 2000, 01:58 AM Ok, so is it serial or ps/2...reading all the posts i'm still trying to figure it out...either way...serial ports and ps/2 ports can be either built into the m/b or plugged into the m/b....so as to whether they can be replaced easily depends greatly on what you have. Also, you can swap mouse and keyboard ps/2 ports on INTEL ONLY boards...we do it all the time with about a 75% success rate. take it for what its worth...whether it just prolongs a problem is debateable but you can do it. also Tracy, if it is a serial mouse...you may have 2 serial ports on your system so you could try that too. windrivers.com
