Or does Win ME totally suck? I've been running it on a couple of machines here at the shop for the past 2 weeks, and to say I'm unimpressed with it is a huge understatement. I've done both full installs and upgrades over 98/98SE and have the same lockups/crashes/GPFs on all of them. How does Microsoft get away with releasing such crap? I haven't been this disappointed with an MS product since the first release of Win 95.

Must admit that I have had very few problems with the full version of ME. I have even got an old Cyrix MII333 with 32Mb and a 1gb HDD running it sweet!!! No weird & wonderful error messages. The only systems I have encountered probs with are those which have upgraded using the Upgrade cd or those that are running the VIA KT/KX133 chipsets. Even with the latest VIA drivers teh systems are temperamental.
On my system at home ME is running fine with no lock ups or errors at all since I installed it. I will wait another 6 months before reviewing what I have writtem here just to make sure.

My Upgrade version (done with full install) seems as stable as hell until you come to anything remotely to do with dos.
As Darren says, Via chipsets are giving a lot of hassle, I have no problems with the AMD 750 chipset.

done 4 installs from scratch i think this is the best way with no probs there is a 2Mb critical update available unsure what it actualy does the only thing i have noticed is that it hates your disk being remotely fraged the first install we did we had problems to start with however after defraging immediately after instalation of the OS works fine

My main problem with Win ME isn't that's is WORSE than Win 98, it's just that it's not any better. It's got the same incompatibilities and bugs Win 98 SE did, and it has the horrible IE5.5 built into it. And no option to boot to go to a pure DOS environment is something I miss. Win ME isn't really BAD, I just don't understand why anybody in their right mind would actually pay for it.

I think Me is great dude. Much easier to restore a trashed out registry. It automatically repairs many problems that can arise in normal day-to-day use. Most of which new system buyers would bring back to have fixed under warranty I might add. I send every new machine I build out with Me unless the customer request another op-system.
Like many other techs, I use DOS to skirt around some Microsoft issues ocassionally and I'm not crazy about the lack of access. But hey, a boot disk takes care of that. I sell Athlon systems on ASUS boards with the VIA chipsets almost exclusively and can honestly say that I haven't had a single compatiblity problem.
It true that some DOS applications run sucky due to the way Me handles the config.sys. But how many customers do you run into that still run those type of applications. If your like me, not many. If they really rely on those applications, I simply load em up with 98.
Give it a chance. It'll grow on ya. :P

haven't has any problems here... sold a ton of systems with ME since it came out in August, and half the systems in our office are running ME.
The only problem i have had is the lack of DOS support... i.e.: when it first came out in August I wanted to make a boot disk, i went to the command prompt and typed "sys a:" it told me to go to add/remove programs to make a boot disk.
