Missing MSVCRT.DLL

I hope someone out there can help me out. When I try to start some of my programs I get the following message:
A device attached to the system is not working.
This is followed by this other message:
The MSVCIRT.DLL file is linked to missing export MSVCRT.DLL:??_U@YAPAXI@Z
When I do a search I find at least 6 files named MSVCRT.DLL in various areas of the system. Even the tech at my local computer stora cannot figure this out. They suggest I reformat my drive....... YUK.
The programs I am trying to run include Paint Shop Pro, and The Longest Journey, which is a game. These programs were working before but I don't know what I could have done or installed to cause this ugly mess. Help, anyone?????

first make sure it is in the windows/system directory. if the program still won't run, look in the programs folder and see if there are any other .dll's there. if there are put the mscvrt.dll into it too.

thank you techs,, I tried all that,, still having the same problem..Other programs that give me the same message are PageKeeper Standard 3.0 and PageKeeper Scan..

I also get the message Cannot find game.exe
but when I do a search that game.exe is in the system..

reinstall IE 5 if possible , it uses the mscvrt.dll , and also will go though a registry rebuild.

maybe that will help/

Thank you all for the help, I finally ran sfc.exe and restored the original files from my Windows disk, and I am back on track.
