Com ports

Can anyone help with com port problem, I installed UMC modem with the proper 98 drivers and the diagnostic finds the modem on com 4, but when I try to connect I get an error message that the modem is not turned on or connected, so I go back to the diagnostic and it says the port is already open, any help would be appreciated.

Try going into your Motherboard BIOS and disabling any COM ports (might be listed as serial ports) that aren't needed (usually COM1 for a serial mouse). Then before rebooting into Windows, shut down the system and move the modem to a different slot to make sure Windows redetects it.

Thank you for your prompt reply, I tried your solution unfortunately it did not work.
I downloaded modem doctor and it tells me that windows thinks com4 is a 16450 UART
and PNP0500 EISA device ID used by windows for configuration
Port and IRQ settings set during windows installation.
Does this mean that I have to set them manually?
This modem did work under W95 but not since upgrade.

Have you tried uninstalling the com port and let windows redetect it?

Disable com2 in the bios, since this shares com4 IRQ.

Boot into safe mode, go into device mangler and remove all com ports and modems, then reboot. It is important to remove the devices in safe mode to remove the possiblilty of anything lingering.

If it's a PCI modem, you should make sure that device manager has a Modem Enumerator in it. If it doesn't, you may want to download updated drivers for your modem.

Thanks Larommi, your suggestion worked a treat! windows picked up all ports bar 2 and then the modem!
