An exception OD has occurred

Hi.....thx for taking the time to help me. Iam working on a friends Micron PC....Its a PII 233.......the machine keeps going into safe mode when you boot it up .After about 2 minutes in safe mode i get a blue screen that says "An exception OD has occurred at 0028:C00015E1 in VxD---This was called from 0028:C02328E4 in VxD" thx for your help in advance....bob

my first guess would be heating problem - open the case and check that the CPU fan is working..

My second guess is that the RAM is DEAD...

use this RAM tester (http://ftp.zdnet.com/threedee/tweakfiles/diagnostic/docmem1_45.exe) to make sure.

and Please give some system info (hardware specs.. what version of windows..)

The machine is running Win 98 SE P2 233 80 meggs of ram with no fan (heat sink) on the CPU.....i did open the box and the fan on the power supply was workin and the fan that blows on the heat sink was workin as well....i tryed to d/l the ram tester but the link was broke.....if the ram is bad would there be any visable burn marks on it?.....thx for the help.... ;)

If you can see burn/scorch marks on the components, then usually that indicates either extremely faulty components or a major power surge. Usually, parts fail with no external signs. If you see scorch marks on anything, an exhaustive test of every component is called for.

If a computer crashes after a few minutes, that almost always indicates a heat problem. Since the CPU is the hottest, then it is the usual culprit. However, check the RAM and motherboard after a few minutes. Something could be blown that is causing other parts to overheat and fail. Make sure there is no dust in the case. Remove and reseat ALL components (mem, CPU, all cards, etc.)
