My buddies PC( HP Pavilion 4430,Amd300)crapped out on him a few days ago so I made the mistake on saying I'll take care of it.. well anyway here's the problem.. I tried reinstalling the restore disk but it keeps crapping out on me..Looking for drive "M" to install to??? So I turned to installing my own 98se on it,everything installs ok, but when it does the auto stutdown after the install it gives me, Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer. "C:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd: Missing/unable to load..

Is this being caused by me installing my own 98se on a propriatary HP Pavilian 4430?? I've reinstalled twice so we can rule out simple bug.. Any help would be appreciated here.. Thanks Alot..

I don;t think so..

I would do the following :

1. REset CMOS
2. Run Fdisk /mbr from a clean Boot disk http://www.bootdisk.com - to clean any MBR viruses..

3. Reformat the HDD.

4. Use this RAM tester to check the RAM http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,,0014L8,.html

Possibly bad ram. I saw this yesturday and new ram fixed it. Like Condor said test the ram, or boot to safe mode and let windows test it when it loads XMS.

Hey, read this thread right here. We just dealt with this same issue a couple weeks ago. :)
