I was wondering if anyone had run into this particular problem. I am running Windows 98SE with IE 5.5 and I seem to be having problems with my Internet connection. I have two computers that share the same telephone wall outlet and the Dell has no problems while the Gate does so I believe it to be problems with the computer or modem itself.

I can almost never connect on the 1st attempt but always on the second. But, many times, the details of the connection will show only about 200-300 bytes “Sent” and “Received” and I am unable to access the Internet but I am connected to my local ISP. As I said, my other unit does not have this problem. I can even try a different ISP and I still have the same problem. I have uninstalled the modem and reinstalled and even updated the drivers. This problem seems to occur about 1 out of every three dial-up attempts. I am dialing up at about 45.333 Kbps.

Any ideas?

It's gotta be the modem. Not necesarily bad...the one in the Gate is just not as good as the one in the Dell. Some modems are just better than others at making connections and transfering data. If you had the time and energy, you could try swapping them out just to verify. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it unless it really starts bugging you.
