Lost My Default Win 98 Profile

In my attempt to install samba, set it up on the linux machine

I have a problem HELP
I added a user in win 98 as root and the gave it the password as the same as
root on the linux machine (root is the only user) as I am the only user on
all machines

I rebooted and I see a screen on Win98 that says root and to put in the
password. When I click CANCEL I am hoping to get back to my normal desktop.
The desktop was there but all my passwords have disappeared. e - mail, web
site password. etc

Also in Network Neighborhood it sais UNABLE TO BROWSE THE NETWORK. I can
access the net but the other computers on my LAN I cant

When I do enter root's account by puting in the password I can access
Network Neighborhood and the linux box (samba)

But I want my old settings back on the win 98 before I added "root" to it, (passwords, web site passwords, IE 5.5 memory from forms. etc)
HOW DO I DO THIS

If I delete the root account while I am in the other will this help

Is the screen you see like this:

User Name: ROOT
Password:

OK Cancel

If so, this is a simple log-on screen for the machine, If you cancel, the machine will start in All Users settings. So you should do 1 of these:

Enter the password for ROOT on the win box

Or: Go to control panel>Passwords and set all users have the same settings

Or: Go to Control Panel>Network and choose the approprite log on settings

Or....Have I got your question completely wrong?

Yes, I think you understand me and yes that is what I see at boot up. So you are saying thats when I hit 'cancel' it does not go to my default profile it goes to the 'All Users' profile

Currently in /windows/profiles/ it has a 'All Users' and a "root' folfer

When I added the user 'root' (for samba) there were NO users on Win 98. I am the only user on all of them so there was no need to add/have users. When I added the user 'root' in win 98 I chose each user can customize their ssettings

When I click cancel I can access the default desktop As a matter of fact the user 'root' has the same sesktop. The problem is all my passwords, email passwords, website pass, forum, IE form filling is gone, and Network Neighborhood cant be accessed


I want my default win 98 profile back

Sorry I didn't read to the end of your first EMail - that'll teach me!!

Check your C:\\Windows directory and see if there is a *.pwl file there. If so, the machine will have remembered at least one User,a nd the associated password. If there is a root.pwl file, delete it, and you can enter a new password when you next log on as root.

I am assuming that under ControlPanel>Users you have no Users listed - if you do, you can still access these

Also, if you have apps like Word installed, see where it defaults save to - you should find the current profile path this way, even if it is simply the default (unless you changed the location through Tools>Options which from what you say I doubt)

Then you need to go hunting!

MS stores profile data in many different places. I'm looking at a network W98 machine and will try and tell you where to look!

First. c:\DocumentsAndSettings. See what data you have in there - there should be an All Users File. If there is data in there you need , copy it to a new folder on c:\ (Call it whatever you want)

Second. Go c:\Windows>AllUsers. You should find in there all the Windows customisations if any have been made. Copy what you need to your new folder

Third. Go c:\Windows\ApplicationData. You should find an Identities folder, and possibly others. In identities you'll find folder(s)with numbers and characters. These hold data for such things as Outlook Express. Copy the ones you need to your new folder. Look in any other sub-folders (such as Microsoft, Microsoft Web Folders) you,ll find data for address book and loads of other stuff. Copy what you need

Thirdly. Look in c:\Windows\Desktop. You might find missing shortcuts/data there. You know what to do with anything you need

Then c:\windows\ApplicationData. Do as above

Then try c:\Windows\TemporayInternetFiles - you should find all your cookies etc. Don't copy them yet, just note what you need

I know you said you don't have profiles, but also check c:windows\profiles and make sure - if there is nothing else, there should be an All Users folder there, and that may hold data you need. If there are any other profiles in the Profiles folder, check them out - they could contain all the data you need.

Try that, and then let me know where you got to!
