problem with usb keyboard/mouse and win 9x install

i have an acer aspire computer with a printer, vga, and four usb ports on board. i tried to do a clean install and when i installed windows again it would not reconize the usb devices. it kept asking fo a ps2 or serial port mouse/keyboard and my computer can't accept on. can someone tell me if there is a way to install these devices so i can get away from 98 with a clean install.
