Computer slowing down, anyone help pls.

Hi

After my comp has been on for few hours, it goes a little crazy, like say im listening to music via winamp, everytime i close a borwser window, my comp just freezes for about 3 seconds so the song does as well and it is very annoying as i could understand if my computer had been on for days, but only has to be on for a few hours.

I've ran a virus check, no viruses.

My system resources are at 60 per cent normally.

It's been happening since i defragged my drive for the first time in a while last weekend, any ideas pls as i have to keep re-booting.

How much on board memory do you have? A memory upgrade is always a good performance boost. <a href="http://www.crucial.com" target="_blank">Crucial</a> & <a href="http://www.kingston.com" target="_blank">Kingston</a> are a couple of reputable companies to obtain additional RAM

Basiclly Windows 98 sucks. The longer windows98 is on the slower it gets. Also the longer Windows98 has been on a system without a fresh install the slower the performance. How many months/years have you been running 98?

Yep, i do realise Win 98 sucks and i need new comp (Im getting one), but im worried by why it has only just started happening, since the defarg, surely that should HELP it?

I have 128 ram until i buy new comp.

disable start up items with MSCONFIG so that you can be sure that nothing is starting up without your knowledge and sucking up resources. Also I wouldn't overlook a heat issue as it becomes unstable the longer it's on. Check the hard drive and CPU temps and make sure nothing is too warm. If there is a lot of dead air in your case because of cable mess, that can cause overheating.

60% resources is rather low, but it has nothing to do with how many apps are running at the time.

Check your start up in MSCONFIG and eliminate any unnecessary apps. Also a simple scandisk/defrag may help. If all else fails, reformat/reload.

Sorry, i meant it was 60 per cent when it slowed down, its 90 per cent at boot-up :)

It sounds rather like something may have a memory leak. As others have suggested, try running without various things that load at startup, but since it began after a defrag, maybe a file has been corrupted. Since it happens as you close windows in the browser (i guess IE?) have you tried the repair option for IE in Add/Remove Programs? Also try to think of anything else you changed around the same time, e.g. did you defrag because you installed something? Updated drivers? Drivers are a recognised source of memory leaks.

I do not discount the accounts of the other suggestions, but the 'after a few hours on' brings to my attention a problem of over heating. When you dusted the case and the fan the last time?
