Hello,

i've completely reinstalled a working Win95-sytem to Win98
and it seemed to be ok - no resources are marked red.
But when i start the explorer, the system hangs. I found it out to be the CDROM (by disconnecting the cable), but when i start the system with the Win98-bootdisk the CD is pretty good in order - no probs.

Has someone seen anything like this or a few helpful hints?
BTW: I already have done the "system-reconfiguration" by deleting all system-resources and i also tried different CD-drivers by force -> no better result.

thanks to any help

My system:
P166, 64MB EDO, Monster1, SMC8416pnp, SB16, soyo-mobo with spea-V7 onboard, IBM DAQA 3.2,
8x CDROM (they told me to be a Sony)

Does the CD-ROM work in win 98 safe mode? If so check the settings and if DMA is on turn it off and reboot.

Great! Thanx, that's it!

Now perhaps you can answer me: what for is this DMA-Flag and why does this make the CD-ROM hang?

DMA stands for direct memory access. MOST new CD-ROM drives support this feature. Which allows the system faster access to the data. In a win98 install it defaults to on, i think.

The problem is if you have a CD-Drive that doesn't support it the system will lock up as you describe or slow to a crawl.
