I recently reformated my hard drive. When I started to reinstall win95 I realized I only had an upgrade copy. I no longer have a copy of 3.1 to upgrade from.(except on my tape backup which is now unaccessable.) I have heard you can create files on the hard drive to trick win95 upgrade into thinkinking 3.1 is installed. Can anyone help me out???????

If you canboot the hard disk to a c:> prompt than you can.

What you need is a file in the root directory called "NTLDR" no extension. It does not matter what is in this file or the length.

An easy way to create this file is at the prompt to type: dir > NTLDR

This will copy the root directory into the file. With NTLDR in place it will pass the existing windows test and you can install. WHen you are finished you can delete NTLDR or just leave it there its not that big anyway.

Good Luck
