My Win98 Machine is suffering from Kernel32.dll crashes. About 40% of the time when Windows 98 loads I get:

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 0177:bff7a3c2.

As an attempt to resolve the problem I have:

1.) Put:
files=65
buffers=40
stacks=64,512

into the config.sys file

2.) Used SFC to extract kernel32.dll

3.) Upgraded my Bios, and downloaded and installed the latest video and audio drivers.

4.) Tested the system memory using Dell Diagnostics.

5.) Re-built IE5

My computer does not have Animated mouse cursors, mouse trails, and Active Desktop enabled.

Any ideas?

Been running that fix for over a month. It solved my BSOD problems, but not the kernel32.dll crashes.

I had this problem a while ago, and found there was a conflict between Clean Sweep and IE 5.0. The text file I saved said:

"The APITRAP.DLL file on the ftp site can be used to fix problems you may be encountering with CleanSweep and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0. You will want to replace the existing APITRAP.DLL file on your computer with the one you have downloaded from the ftp site.

To replace the APITRAP.DLL file:

1. Download the APITRAP.DLL file from the ftp site to the desktop.

2. Click Start, point to Shut Down.

3. Choose "Restart in MS-DOS Mode". The computer will reboot to a DOS prompt.

4. At the DOS prompt, type:

CD DESKTOP

5. At the new prompt, type:

COPY APITRAP.DLL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

6. Choose Yes if prompted to overwrite an older file.

7. Restart into Windows.

Please contact CleanSweep Technical Support for further questions."

You may want to check this out. I can e-mail you the apitrap.dll file, although you should be able to easily search for it on the net.

Are you running an AMD 350 or above? If so get the patch for that too.

The Cleansweep patch solved the problem...
