while doing a clean install of win98se I get:

error while initializing device vpicd,
windows protection error, you need to restart your computer.

I get this error before the setup process does my system configuration.
It comes right after the splash screnn comes up

After which I restart up in safe mode, but since I have no idea what the VPICD device might be, Im quite stuck in a vicious loop.

The specs are
PII 300
128/32/32 pc100 ram
abit BX mobo
viper 770 ultra
creative 38x cdrom
HP cdwriter plus
6.2 gig Fireball K (66)

The Viper and the mobo are new, the rest of the gear was already in the system. I formatted C:, copied all .cab files to c:/win and ran setup from there

Thanks in advance for any thoughts/solutions

Do you have the original win98se disk? Just a guess but I am betting that MS has made it difficult for people to copy the installed cabs and reinstall from there (or did you copy the cabs from a cdrom?) even still if possible try installing from the cdrom

Cheers,

PS-let meknow how you make out.

For the curious, VPICD is Virtual Programmable Interrupt Controller Device. How's that for some good party conversation.

SoccerFiend76, yeah, i tried it off the cd also. infact in a moment of weakness I called Microsoft, and after about two hours of trying everything they could think of, My problem is being sent "up" to the next level. They should call tuesday.

I think it is somehow connected to the Fireball drive and the UDMA 66 somehow.

Well,

After removing the stick of bad ram, moving my network card to another slot and reinstalling, evrything is ok.
