I currently have a PIII 500 w/512 cache,it is a slot 1 processor..
can someone please explain all the new stuff so we can understand it?
I want to put in a slot1 PIII 800,all the ones I find say they are 256 cache and correct me if im wrong but they call it a coppermine..whats that?wheres the 512 cache?its the new 800w/256 not as good as the 500??

briefly, you can install the piii 800 in the same board and it's going to be faster for you.

There is a chance a PII 800 will not work on your system. Check with the motherboards manufacturers website and make sure it can do voltages for a coppermine. Some of the older BX borads have a problem with the lower voltages. Or you might have to update the bios to reconize the coppermine correctly. Also be sure to get an 800e with a 100 mhz fsb and not an 800eb with a 133 fsb as the bx will not like that either. If you have a newer VIA or 815 motherboard then any of the 800s will do.
As far as the diffence between the 512k PIIIs and the new coppermine with 256k cache, intel released a new version of the PIII awhile ago that has half the cache as the old PIIIs but run at full clock speed. Which differed from the older design where the cache ran at 1/2 clock speed. The result is that it is faster.
