samsung 1.6 gig hd
soundblaster pro16
trident video card
28.8 gvc modem
64meg of pc100 ram
fsb @66x5.5
vcore @ 2.1
clean install of win98 locks up often everything works well when it runs, no error messages, control panel looks good, the vcore voltage was set at 2.2 thought that might be the problem so i set it down a smidge didn't help i guess i could try going up a smidge with will try that tomorrow don't see how that would cause the problem though, could be that i don't have enough ram too or it isn't a good brand i will check that out tomorrow too, i have done all i can think of but was looking here for some insight that some one else may have it is a simple problem it is just finding a simple solution i am having trouble with thanks in advance for any help

Is your processor AMD or CYRIX?
If it is an AMD k6-2, keep it set at 2.2 volts, you'll just cause even more lockups when you fiddle around with the voltage and risk damaging the processor or board and no warranty for that. If it's a cyrix processor, then that's probably the source of your lockups. Cyrix is no good.
Also try a different video card besides your trident video card. Past experience has shown me that tridents can cause lockups as well.
Also, what is the chipset on your tyan motherboard? Sometimes chipsets made from other companies (ie. via, sis) aside from intel sometimes may not be exactly compatible with WIN98, but the chipset is rarely the problem.
Were you installing the original WIN98 (upgrade or full version?) or SE?
Did you fdisk and format your hd before installing Win98?
Did you use Win95 on this system originally without any major problems?
Do you have the latest drivers for your soundcard, video card, etc.? Win98 may have direct support for them, but you never know if there is a newer one out there.
Were you getting the lockups during the installation or after the installation or both? That could be a sign of bad ram depending how long you have had it for.
Are you also using a network card? Hope this helps.

It's good that you switched back the voltage to default 2.2 volts, but you should set your processor to 3.5 X 100 MHZ because that's what the 350 is meant to function at, not 5.5 X 66 MHZ. That way you take advantage of 100mhz bus speed instead of 66 mhz.
Is your Trident video card agp or pci? and how much video Ram does it have?
As mentioned before, try a different video card (ie.ATI) and see what happens and see about finding newer drivers for your components if available.
Did you buy your AMD processor in a retail box or as just an OEM VERSION?
Are you using the first version of Win98 or the Second Edition version?

If all else fails, try a different processor (ie.Pentium MMX or classic) and test it on your current board to see if you have a defective processor? Processors are rarely defective.
